Question:

Memory/RAM Upgrade Question?

Hello, i am currently using an Acer Aspire 1640 with 512mb RAM

I have just installed Windows Vista HOME BASIC, and all the time the physical memory (RAM) is being used up alot, basically its always being used about 80%, you never get lower than that. So of course when i come to play a game, there is not much memory left to use for it, as its all being used on the operating system.

Now i currently have 2 x 256mb modules in there, and am going to change one of the 256 modules for a 1gb module, so in total i will have:

1 x 1GB

1 x 256MB

Now could someone give a rough estimate of how much of the memory would be used up then, and if it would be enough to play basic games etc.

As i said, with 512mb RAM it uses 80-90% all the time, how much would someone estimate it uses with 1GB+256MB

Thanks so much!

  1. Around 30/40%

  2. If you plan to run games on it, get 2GB, 1.25Gb still won't go very far with windows vista.

  3. I'm on Vista HB and I've got 1 GB of RAM intotal and my system runs fine. I am always playing games and stuff so 1GB + 256 MB will definitely be enough and have a low percentage.

  4. Hey

i wuld recommend 2GB of ram coz i hve vista ultimate and that runs pretty gd with 2GB of ram, however if u cant afford to buy 2GB ram i think 1GB and 256MB of ram will be enough and shuld be ok

  5. I have a 2GB RAM and it uses a little over 1 all the time. It should be just about perfect for what your saying.

  6. for windows vista to run at optimum it needs 512 minimum, on top of that depends on any anti-virus or active programs. So if its using 80-90% of the ram upgrading it will use about 55-65% so depending on what game you want to play (bf2 needs 512 minimum to play). So it may be better to boost the 256 to 512 also if using vista.

  7. i had the same problem when i up graded to vista home premium i just put in 1 gb of ram and that is enough for my laptop but all are different i say it would be enough

(be careful with vista as it can easily become faulty at anytime for no reason, mine has done it a few times. vista is grate though otherwise)

  8. I use 2 GB and im playing games all the time.

  9. I get pc help from http://www.pchelpdoc.com

Just follow some of the links you'll

    Definately get some help there!

    Goodluck!

  10. It would use a lot of memory, but you will still have over 512 free I would think when you are not doing anything.

Another person who should have stayed with XP... When are people going to learn that the upgrade to Vista is pointless and a waste of money?....
