Memory card error. When putting the memory card into the hp 1350 to download we received a memory

When putting the memory card into the hp 1350 to download we received a memory card error , and are unable to retrieve these pictures. Are these pictures lost ? can we recover them , when we put the memory card in the camera it asks if we want to format ?
