  1. Could be that the reader can't handle the size of the card.  Is it large? Like 4 GB or more?

That causes a problem for some older systems and readers.

If the card is corrupted you should reformat it in the camera in which it is used.  NEVER allow the computer to erase or re-format your card!

Caution!  Re-formatting WILL erase everything on the card.

  2. It sounds like the card is corrupt. Try rebooting the computer and see if it will mount using the card reader.

If there are photos on the card that are very important, you can try a data recovery solution like PhotoRescue from http://datarescue.com/.

Download the demo and see if it can locate any missing files. If it can find files you want, then you pay $30 for the full version of the program and recover your files.

If you don't mind losing what is on the chip, then try reformatting the card using the camera utilities.

If that doesn't work, it's time to get a new card. If it does work, keep an eye on this card. If it continues to give you problems, then it's time to replace it.
