Why is it that I can remember things from 50 years ago, but sometimes in an advert break on TV, I can't even remember what I'm watching?

  1. Happens to me all the time. I think this computer in my head is running out of storage space, but alas we cant defrag. can we.

  2. I can't answer this but if it's any consolation I'm fifty and my short-term memory has suddenly deteriorated. I've noticed it's much worse if I'm stressed.

  3. check your brian ,MRI is never bad.I always fear alzhimers

  4. The memories from fifty years ago firstly use long term memory whereas watching TV requires short term memory (two completely different processes). Secondly, memories from fifty years ago are usually robust, ingrained (or they wouldn't have lasted), so you only have to retrieve them, relatively simple. Whereas short term memory requires the creation, maintenance and retrieval of memories all of which is harder, and more taxing, and requires more attention and resources

You can improve it with brain training, i.e. sudoku, etc.

  5. short term is shutting down you may be getting dementcha.

  6. Actually, the brain is a very strange thing. For one thing, there are some memories that will stay with you for your entire life (example: your first kiss, your wedding day) - the brain stores these so that you will never ever forget them. It is not quite clear why or how it knows which events to store forever, but of course they are normally similar - usually things that move the person's emotions greatly at that moment in time.

However, for the things that are considered "unimportant" or not "major events" in your life, these will be more easily forgotten. Do not worry, though, I am certain doctors can prescribe medicines that will aid in recovering more of your short-term memory.
