Memphis Grizzlies, New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks win: NBA Sunday Round-up (Part 3)
Memphis Grizzlies 111 – New Orleans Hornets 89
Five players scored in double figures as the Memphis Grizzlies thrashed the New Orleans Hornets 111-89 at FedExForum on Sunday night.
Guard O.J. Mayo came off the bench with 18 points while centre Marc Gasol had 18 points and seven rebounds in the Grizzlies second consecutive victory. Forward Zach Randolph and guard-forward Sam Young posted 14 points each for Memphis, who have won eight
of their last 10 games.
Guard Marco Belinelli chipped in with 18 points while Trevor Ariza, Carl Landry and Willie Green added 11 points apiece in the Hornets second straight defeat. Both teams played the first quarter at crisp pace and were tied at 30-30 after 12 minutes.
The Grizzlies shot 66 percent from the field in the second quarter and held a 52-48 lead at half time. Memphis then went on a 17-8 run in the third quarter and outplayed New Orleans 30-19 in the quarter, taking an 82-67 advantage into the final stanza.
The Grizzlies maintained their double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter to seal their 46th victory of the season.
New York Knicks 110 – Indiana Pacers 109
The New York Knicks posted their seventh straight win with a hard-fought 110-109 victory over the Indiana Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse on Sunday night.
Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony scored a game-high 34 points, grabbed five assists and four rebounds in the victory. Chauncey Billups had 21 points while Toney Douglas netted 14 points for the Knicks, who have won seven of their last 10 games.
Danny Granger paced Indiana with 20 points and six rebounds while Roy Hibbert finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds in the defeat. Darren Collison added 16 points, five assists and five rebounds, while Tyler Hansbrough and Mike Dunleavy scored 14 points
each for the Pacers, who saw their two-game winning streak snapped.
The opening quarter ended in a 33-33 tie. However, New York held a 67-61 lead at half time. The Pacers stormed back and went on a 15-5 run early in the third quarter to take a 76-72 lead. Indiana captured a 96-87 advantage at the end of the third.
The Knicks opened the fourth quarter with a 10-2 rally to cut their nine-point deficit to one at 98-97 with less than nine minutes to go in the quarter. Indiana managed to make it to the free throw line and carried a 109-103 lead. New York scored seven unanswered
points in the last three minutes of the final stanza to seal the victory.
Dallas Mavericks 115 – Phoenix Suns 90
Dirk Nowitzki scored 19 points as the Dallas Mavericks won their seventh consecutive game against the Phoenix Suns with a 115-90 victory at the American Airlines Centre on Sunday night.
Shawn Marion added 18 points and 11 rebounds while Jason Terry and Peja Stojakovic came off the bench with 17 points each in the victory. Marcin Gortat had 15 points and nine rebounds while Jared Dudley and Hakim Warrick both ended with 11 points in the
defeat.
The Mavs remained hot throughout the first quarter, which was their highest-scoring opening stanza of the current season. Dallas held a 36-17 lead going into the second. The Mavericks shot 52 percent from the field in the second quarter and extended their
lead to 65-39 at half time.
The Knicks continued to play sloppy basketball and were unable to reduce the deficit to less than 17 points throughout the fourth quarter.
