Memphis Grizzlies' Jason Williams decides to retire from the game: NBA Update
The Memphis Grizzlies' Jason Williams has decided to retire from the game after playing 12 years in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The official statement came out on Monday from the Memphis Grizzlies’ management as Jason has announced his retirement.
The 35-year-old point guard, Jason Williams, came into the Memphis as a free agent on February 07, 2011, but due to his injured lower back he could not able to play the last 17 regular season’s games for the Memphis Grizzlies.
Williams has appeared in well over 760 regular season’s games since making his debut in the professional league of NBA. He was selected by the Sacramento Kings in the NBA draft 1998. Williams came into Sacramento and grabbed the early attention by many as he performed brilliantly in his rookie season. Williams along with his team-mates, Chris Webber and Peja Stojakavić, was among the top performers in that particular season and guided their team into the play-offs.
In 2001, when Jason Williams was traded to the Vancouver Grizzlies (after relocation to Memphis Grizzlies) nobody had realised as Williams’ inclusion in the Grizzlies roster will boost the team extensively. The Memphis Grizzlies went on to win record 28 games and establish a franchise record. Williams stayed at Memphis until 2005, when he moved to the Miami Heat. Williams was also part of that biggest trade in the history of the NBA which involved thirteen players.
Williams started as a point guard for the Miami Heat and ultimately won the first NBA title with the Miami Heat in June, 2006. The Miami Heat defeated the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA finals where Williams averaged 12 points and five assists per game. Jason Williams was also selected in the Top-25 Heat players of all time by the Heat management in 2007.
Williams came into Los Angeles in the summer of 2008. He agreed to play a season for the Clippers, but surprisingly announced his retirement after playing 10 years in the NBA. Soon he changed his mind and came back and signed with Orlando Magic in 2009 and played a whole season with them.
Williams eventually bid farewell to the Magic's management and came into Memphis for the second time in his career in 2011. Williams played 11 games for the Memphis Grizzlies since becoming the part of the Grizzlies roster in 2011, as his lower back injury prevented him from further playing in the season.
Jason Williams’ average was not impressive this time around, but he proved his talent earlier in his career, when he used to play for the same franchise back in 2001 to 2005. In his four seasons, Williams’ averaged 11.9 points, 7.2 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game and still holds the Grizzlies' all time assists record of 2069.
