Memphis Grizzlies center Hamed Haddadi arrested for domestic assault
Police were called to the home of Hamed Haddadi of the Memphis Grizzlies after he was involved in an altercation with his girlfriend. The 7'2" centre, who is from Iran, was arrested for
domestic assault.
On Thursday morning, police found Haddadi and his girlfriend with bruises and scratches after they were called to the player's apartment building in downtown Memphis. According to a report
from Fox Memphis, Goolnaz "Asal'' Karbalaeinematmoeeney, Haddadi's girlfriend, was described as "extremely intoxicated." Police officers at the scene said that they found Karbalaeinematmoeeney with a black eye, bruises around her neck and a cut on her finger.
Argument stemmed from refusal to have s*x
The police's arrest report said that a verbal disagreement led the two to engage in a physical altercation. Karbalaeinematmoeeney said that they argued because she refused to have s*x.
Both Haddadi and Karbalaeinematmoeeney were brought to the Regional Medical Center for treatment.
In a statement, Chris Wallace, the general manager of the Memphis Grizzlies, said that the team is aware of Haddadi's situation but will withhold comment until they have gathered all the
facts.
Haddadi encountered difficulty with U.S. government sanctions before gaining entry into the NBA. Since American organizations are prohibited from engaging in business dealings with Iranian
nationals, the NBA had to apply for a license that would allow Haddadi to play in the league.
He missed a part of the Grizzlies' training camp this off-season after being detained in Iran due to legal issues.
A back-up center who plays behind Marc Gasol, Haddadi has spent his two years in the NBA with the Grizzlies. Last season, he played in 36 games and averaged 1.7 points, 2.1 rebounds
and 0.4 blocks while shooting 38.7 percent from the field.
So far this season, Haddadi has only played in four of Memphis' first 15 games.
