Memphis Grizzlies’ centre Hamed Haddadi exploring options to play in China: NBA Update
According to sources, the Memphis Grizzlies reserve centre Hamed Haddadi is exploring his options to play in China.
His agent Marc Cornstein recently told the media about Haddadi’s aspirations to play in China during the lockout in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
“We’re in talks now for him to play in China, There are some good opportunities there and, the more he plays, the more he will develop.”
The Iranian born, Haddadi started his professional basketball career in Iran. He played in Iran’s professional Basketball Super league with Paykan and Saba Battery. Haddadi arrived in Memphis Grizzlies in 2008 and has yet to find
some good minutes on the court. He has spent almost three years with the Grizzlies, but is still struggling with his game. He has not played much for the Grizzlies and has appeared in total 86 games so far.
The 26-year old has a career average of 2.2 points per game but can improve his game if he gets the chance to play in China. Haddadi not only has a bright chance to improve his game, but he might also get some good endorsement
deals in the Asian country. Outside the NBA, the Chinese Basketball league is the biggest market for professional basketball players.
There is also the fact that the European teams might not be interested in a player who has not delivered so far in NBA. With so many options available, they are likely to go for a superstar.
Haddadi’s agent however indicated that his client wants to have an escape clause in his contract. He loves playing in the NBA and is most likely to return as soon as the lockout will be lifted from the players. Early in the last
season, Haddadi made some splashed when he was embroiled in a reported scuffle with his wife. Except for that, there wasn’t much related to the Iranian star.
Haddadi has been one of the most influential players for Iran and the Grizzlies know Haddadi’s game will grow gradually and giving some extra time on court will be benefit them in the long run. For the time being though, they can
just watch as he tries to search for a team during the lockout.
