Memphis Grizzlies rookie Josh Selby not fazed too much by the NBA lockout
Memphis Grizzlies draftee Josh Selby has stated that although he would have liked to go straight into the NBA after being drafted, he doesn’t worry too much about the current NBA lockout. The players and owners are at loggerheads
over a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), leaving rookies like Selby in the dark without any NBA contracts, but Selby says he can get by for the moment.
The former Kansas player is one of many young players, who knew that declaring for the NBA draft this year could be problematic, but took the decision anyway. While others, like Kemba Walker, have complained of how the lockout
has been really tough on them, Selby says there’s not much he can do about it and its best to just stay calm.
"Money-wise, I wouldn't say it's been difficult," Selby said according to Commercial Appeal. "It would be wonderful if there wasn't a lockout. But everybody has a loan they can take out. I'm just trying to keep a budget and make
sure I don't overspend. I don't need to buy an expensive car or a home. I don't need any of that."
Selby is keeping himself grounded for the moment, not acting like many of the young talents that come into the NBA and change their lifestyles overnight as stardom takes effect. Selby knows he has to lay low until the NBA season
starts and the 6-foot-3 guard is just concentrating on his game at the moment.
He had the option of not declaring for the draft this year, but he didn’t really find his groove in college. Anyway, he is comfortable with his decision.
"I don't regret any thing," said Selby, a Baltimore native. "I've just been doing what I've always been doing. There's nothing us rookies can do about the lockout so I just wait to hear what's going on."
In the meantime, Selby has been putting in standout performances this summer in the pro-am circuit. He has appeared in many games with NBA level opposition, and featured alongside stars such as Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets,
Kevin Durant of Oklahoma City Thunder and Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks.
He was particularly impressive during the Vegas league, where he dropped over 40 points in one game against NBA level opposition. It is this form that has the Memphis Grizzlies staff and players raving about the new comer and they
can’t wait to get him on the team bus.
Selby has indeed proved to be an astute choice by Memphis, who picked him as the 49th overall, and front offices around the league will be asking questions of their scouts as to how he survived so long in the draft.
