Memphis Grizzlies share wealth in a 102-96 win over the Los Angeles Lakers – NBA Recap
Rudy g*y scored 18 points to lead 7 players in double figures as the Memphis Grizzlies gunned down the Los Angeles Lakers 102-96 at the Staples Centre.
Memphis Grizzlies have had it tough in the last week and on Sunday night; they entered the Staples Centre looking to salvage their first win in a rough four game road stretch. The problem however was that they were up against the Lakers, the side which had beaten them in the last three contests.
Also in the backdrop was their standing in the Western Conference. The last three losses had put the Grizzlies in a rather precarious position and with Utah Jazz, Houston Rockets and Denver Nuggets just breathing beneath their necks, Memphis desperately needed to pull off a win.
O.J. Mayo also played a critical role in the win, scoring 12 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter; Marc Gasol had 13 points and 8 rebounds while Tony Allen had 12. Marreese Speights, Zach Randolph and Hamed Haddadi shared 10 point each, with Z-Bo also hauling down a team high 12 boards.
The Lakers trailed by as many as 14 points early in the third quarter, but a 15-nothing run put them in the lead. They then kept afloat till the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, before a 12-2 Grizzlies run did them for good. Mayo scored seven consecutive points to end that run.
LAL were led by another monstrous night from centre Andrew Bynum. The big scored 30 points on a 11-of-16 shooting, Kobe Bryant and Ramon Session had 18 points apiece while Pau Gasol finished the game with 16 points, 14 rebounds double-double.
The first quarter was fiercely fought and the Lakers barely managed a 22-18 on a three from Bryant deep. What followed though was 10-2 run from Memphis, capped by consecutive triple pointers from Allen and g*y.
Memphis maintained their advantage in the beginning of the second frame and with the scores at 34-31, they raced away to a seven point unanswered run. Mayo made a three point play to put the exclamation mark on that burst, giving Memphis a double digit lead, 41-31.
The Grizzlies held onto their significant advantage, and despite quick scoring by the Lakers they went into the break with a 56-46 edge.
