Mike Conley and Quincy Pondexter have spectacular games as Grizzlies edge out Hawks in nail biting game.
The Memphis Grizzlies defeated the Atlanta Hawks in a preseason game here at the FedExForum on Sunday night. The Grizzlies dominated the third period which enabled them to pick up a 110-102 victory in the end. Mike Conley scored
a game high 18 points and 5 assists for the Grizzlies, going a perfect 5 of 5 from three point range. Marc Gasol had 17 points on the night where as Zach Randolph finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Al Horford was the scoring leader for the Atlanta Hawks,
finishing with 13 points and 5 rebounds. Anthony Morrow had 12 points and Kyle Korver added 11 points and 3 rebounds.
Atlanta came out firing on all cylinders, scoring the first eight points of the game to take an early lead. A three pointer by newly recruited Kyle Korver then gave the Hawks a 13-2 lead, but Memphis came back and back to back
field goals by Gasol had the lead down to 23-15. Morrow then hit a three pointer followed by a bank shot by Horford to put the Hawks up 31-21, and they led 33-25 at the end of the first period.
After leading much of the second period, the Hawks lost control near the end when Rudy g*y hit a three pointer to cut the deficit to 46-51. Conley then stepped up for the Grizzlies, scoring a three pointer to cut the deficit to
49-55, then another one to have the Grizzlies trailing 52-57 and then closed the period with two free throws as the Grizzlies trailed the Hawks 54-59 at the half time break.
Memphis finally tied the game at 69 through a three pointer by Conley at the 8:00 mark in the third period, and then took a 77-72 lead soon after. Six straight points by the Grizzlies then extended the lead to 83-76 and after outscoring
the Hawks 33-20 in the third period, the Grizzlies took an 87-79 lead at the end of the period.
Quincy Pondexter scored seven straight points for the Grizzlies in the fourth period, including a three pointer and allowed the team to extend their lead to 101-89. However, the Hawks were not ready to go away without a fight and
staged a 9-0 run of their own to cut the deficit to 98-101. Pondexter again replied for the Grizzlies, hitting a layup and following that with a three pointer. Randolph then nailed a jump shot as Memphis hung to a 108-102 lead with 1:03 left in the game. The
Hawks then missed their final three field goal attempts of the game as Memphis escaped with a 110-102 victory.
The Grizzlies shot well from the field, going 47.7 percent for the night and a spectacular 10-21 from the three point range. Atlanta were close behind, going 43.8 percent from the field and 6 of 15 from the three point range. The
Grizzlies also had a 50-40 advantage in rebounds for the night.
