Question:

Men's Schwinn Sprint 700C?

I've asked this question before; I get the general gist that the Schwinn Sprint 700C is a pretty shoddy bike, but then again, it's only $184.30...but here's what I'm still wondering: (link below)

If you can answer any or all of these questions, thanks a lot!

1. I plan to use this bike to get to and from school (2.2 miles each way, around 5 miles total per day) for the next 1.5 years; the bike only costs $200, will it last?

2. I've heard a lot about Schwinn Sprint models made in the 70s (I remember '74 and '76, not sure), so is this model classified as 2008 or something?

3. The site (see below) says I'm saving 60% and that the bike originally costs $460--is that real, or is that there to make me feel better about purchasing a crappy bike?

4. I'm up for alternatives, but I don't want to spend any more than $250, max for a road (to use for the next 18 months). If you have any suggestions...I'm having trouble finding one.

  1. It is as simple as this... you can NOT buy a good road bike for $250 or less unless you shop carefully and buy used.

That bike was never worth $460.00. The Sprint from the 70s is a completely different (and much better) bike than the c**p that you are considering.

I suggest that you look around for a used road bike in your price range. There are zillions of them out there at yard sales and flea markets this time of year.

  2. I bought this bike several months ago and i have not been impressed. It is a step up from the Department store bikes...but just barely.  i primarily ride my Fisher MTB but on Saturdays i take my Schwinn on 20 mile morning rides.

it feels stable but i worry about the components holding up day to day. I would recommend this for transportation but i would stop at that.

If i could start over again i would find a decent MTB and rig it out as a commuter bike w/a rack, fenders, slick tires, and a large Cloud 9 seat. i think you can pick up an average Diamond back MTB at a Sports authority for the price range your interested in. 2.2 miles wont be to bad on a MTB

  3. I told you this before, its a bad bike.
