Menendez-MacEiras, Federico Zeballos make it to the main draws – Open Castilla y León 2011
Seeded at number one in the qualifying draws, Adrian Menendez-MacEiras of Spain outplayed his follow compatriot, Carlos Gomez-Herrera in the final round qualifiers of Open Castilla y León on Sunday afternoon.
Menendez-MacEiras had no real difficulty in disposing of the seventh seeded Spaniard in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to make it to the main round draws of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour tournament being
staged at Segovia, Spain. Gomez-Herrera hung in the matchup for one hour and three minutes before he succumbed to the hard-hitting top seed in the second set to mark an end to his voyage at Castilla y Leon.
Despite an ordinary serve of 54 per cent, the top seeded Spaniard banged in 10 thudding aces and secured 24 out of 29 first serve points in the matchup to come out as the winner. Gomez-Herrera failed to strike a single break point
in the entire contest and suffered three out of seven from his opponent to lose the matchup.
Menendez-MacEiras broke early in the first set to race to a 3-1 lead to get the upper hand in the game. Second serve break of the day from the Spaniard sealed off the first set for him at 6-3, giving him a 1-0 lead. Menendez-MacEiras
carried on his winning impetus in the following set as well and just one serve break proved sufficient for him to conclude victory in the second set at 6-3 to make it to the main draws of the tournament.
Menendez-MacEiras will take on the Bolivian qualifier, Federico Zeballos, in the first round matchup later this week. Zeballos qualified for the main rounds of Castilla y León by registering a surprise victory against the eighth
seeded Spanish competitor, Roberto Ortega-Olmedo, in the final round qualifiers on Sunday.
The Bolivian competitor laboured hard for one hour and thirty nine minutes of play, before settling the final scores at 7-6(6), 6-4, to make it into the main rounds of the Challenger Tour event. Despite of firing 10 aces and reeling
off 32 first serve points in the contest, Ortega-Olmedo lost the matchup after suffering two serve breaks from his opponent. The Spaniard took the opening set in to the tie breaker round after an exchange of break points but lost his momentum in the decider
to lose it 6-7(6).
Zeballos had less trouble in concluding victory in the second set and closed out the competition with a serve break at 6-4 to book a date with Menendes-MacEiras in the opening round of main draws.
