Mens Board Shorts?

Question

Are board shorts (mens) different from regular bathing suit? Since they don;t have like liner on the inside do you wear boxers/underwear. And can you where them with out. ( im asking for my brother not myself) Oh and what is the purpose of board shorts?

I wear boardshorts over my swim briefs until I get to the beach or pool ang then take them off. I don't like the chafing they can give my thighs when they are wet. Swim trunks are usually tighter and shorter than board shorts and have some sort of lining, while boardshorts are unlined. Tell your brother to try a square cut suit if he doesn't like swim briefs, I think he would find them much more comfortable and easier to move around in.

Board shorts don't have a lining and usually only have a drawstring in the front as opposed to having an elastic waistband and liner. You can wear underwear if you want, but it is not necessary. I've done both. There really isnt a purpose behind them. They cause a lot of drag in the water making it difficult to swim compared to a brief/jammer "speedo" style suit. Board shorts are common here in the US, but there is no advantage to them.
