Men’s Draw Day 11 Preview – US Open 2012
Second seed Novak Djokovic and fourth seed David Ferrer will fight for a spot in the final four at the US Open 2012, final of the four Grand Slam events taking place in Corona Park in Queens, United States.
The former world number one, Djokovic will square off against the 2009 winner, Juan Martin Del Potro, in the last match at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Both tennis stars will face each other for the eighth time with the Serb leading the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series by 5-2 against Del Potro.
Djokovic stated after triumphing over the Swiss veteran:
"Del Potro is a quality player, somebody that when he's physically fit he can challenge anybody on any surface. It's the quarter-finals. I have to try to play my best."
The Serbian number one got the better of the 18th seed, Stanislas Wawrinka, after recording a 6-4, 6-1, 3-1 retirement victory in 93 minutes.
Del Potro on the other side tumbled the former world number one Andy Roddick who was playing his last tournament. He found his rhythm after losing the opening set, eventually sealing the deal with a 6-7(1), 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-4 success.
The Argentine stunned Djokovic for a bronze medal at the London Olympics two months ago but the 25-year-old avenged his loss in the semi-finals at the Western and Southern Open last month.
Fans can expect to see a four-set thriller with Djokovic bagging the match in the end.
The world number five, Ferrer, will take on eighth seeded Janko Tipsarevic in second match of the morning session at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Spaniard booked this duel after trashing 13th seed, Richard Gasquet, in straight sets while Tipsarevic stomped over the German number one Philipp Kohlschreiber with a 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-2 success.
The veterans will battle each other for the fourth time with Ferrer leading the head-to-head series by 2-1 against the Serbian number two. However, Tipsarevic conquered the Spaniard in straight sets in their last encounter at the Beijing Olympics four years ago.
Tipsarevic commented about his match-up against the Spanish veteran:
"It's going to be a very difficult battle. David is an established Top 5 player, probably way more underestimated and people are not giving him enough credit for the achievements he has made in his career. It's going to be a really, really difficult battle, because both of us are groundstroke players."
Elsewhere at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, top doubles teams will display their skills.
Seeded fifth at this major hard court event, India’s Leander Paes and Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek, are scheduled to battle the Spanish duo, Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez.
The three-time champions, Bob and Mike Bryan from America, are also in action. The second seeded American twins will face off the ninth seeds, Pakistan’s Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Netherlands’ Jean-Julien Rojer, in last match at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.
