Men’s Foil Grand Prix to begin today in Shanghai: Fencing News
The Men’s Foil Grand Prix is to begin today at the Jing’An Gymnasium, Nanyang Avenue, Jing’An District in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China. This tournament will be conducted in only Senior Men’s foil individual discipline under the Chinese Fencing Association
(CFA) from May 9-10.
The individuals were required to get registered before the due date April 20 at the official website of the International Fencing Federation (FIE). The tournament is open for all the fencers who carry the FIE license for the Grand Prix.
The two-day event will commence its pool rounds on the first day, subsequent to the weapon control check. Total sixteen fencers with the FIE world ranking in the Senior Men’s foil discipline will be allowed an automatic bye to the top-64 tableau. On the
other hand, the rest of the players will play the preliminary rounds to qualify into the top-128.
Fencers performing solitary wins or majority wins in the first round will receive an automatic bye into the top-64 tableau whereas the rest will secure their seed into the next round by beating down their opponents.
These rounds are known to be the knock-out or the direct elimination rounds.
The second day will comprise of the bouts among the top-64 followed by the top-32, top-16, the quarter-finals and so on.
The prize distribution ceremony will also take place on the concluding day of the event. The fencers visiting to Shanghai for the event will be accommodated at the Shanghai Ganghong Hotel.
Meanwhile, Shanghai Fencing Association conducted the Women’s Foil World Cup from May 6-8 that included both the individual and team competitions.
In the team event, Italy took the top podium place followed by Russia as runner-up team and Korea at the third position.
On the other hand, the individual competition was won by Hyun Hee Nam from Korea followed by Aida Mohamed from Hungary at second place. The third position was shared between the Elisa Di Francisca from Italy and Astrid Guyart from France.
The Chinese fencers are expected to be seen finishing in the top-20 of this event, helping to improve their international standing.
