Men’s Singles Day Six Preview – US Open 2012
Top seed Roger Federer and the Olympic Champion, Andy Murray, are both in action on Day Six at the Flushing Meadows 2012, last of the four Grand Slam events held in Corona Park in New York City, United States.
The world number one, Federer, is bidding for his 18th Grand Slam title at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The Swiss hammered 44 winners and broke Bjorn Phau serve four times to progress. He needed 90 minutes to carve out the
victory with a 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 score line.
Federer has yet to lose a set at this major hard court event and will face off the former Top 10, Fernando Verdasco, in his third round battle at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Verdasco battled past his compatriot, Albert Ramos, in a four-set thriller to set-up
this meeting.
The Swiss Maestro has conquered Verdasco on all of his four previous meetings. With his current run of form, Federer is unstoppable and is likely to formulate a straight set win.
Bidding for his maiden Grand Slam title, Murray is also in exceptional run of form. He trashed the Croatian star, Ivan Dodig, with a breadstick to reach the round of 32. The British top ranked star needed one hour and 51 minutes to cripple the Croat. He
broke Dodig’s serve six times to steal the spotlight.
"I thought I played well," said Murray in a post match press conference. "It was a lot of long rallies. He moves incredibly well; he’s very, very quick around the court and you always need to play an extra shot against him. I moved my feet really well tonight
and played well."
Murray, who toppled the Swiss number one to capture gold medal at the London Olympics, will take on 30th seeded Feliciano Lopez. The seeded Spaniard battled past his compatriot, Pablo Andujar, in a five-set thriller to secure this spot.
The third seeded Scot has won on all six previous battles against the winning Spaniard. He is most likely to improve his FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head record by crushing Lopez with a breadstick.
Crowd favourite, Fish will display his skills against 16th seeded Gilles Simon in a night match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. The American made an epic comeback from two sets down to overpower Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko in a five-set thriller. Simon
on the other hand rallied past the Taiwanese qualifier, Jimmy Wang, in four sets to set up this date.
Both contestants are battling each other for the fourth time with the French seed leading the head-to-head series by 2-1 against Fish. Simon won on their previous fight at the French Open last season but with the support from crowd, the American veteran
is likely to clinch the match.
The Canadian number one, Milos Raonic, is also scheduled to play. He will take on the former world number four, James Blake, at the Grandstand Stadium in the afternoon session. In their only encounter at the SAP Open in San Jose last season, Raonic eased
past the American in straight sets. However, Blake is in much better form at his home Grand Slam event and will give tough time to the 19-year-old.
