Mensa Heat ready to take down On Trust Handicap at Hollywood Park after Cal Cup disappointment
The California breds get an opportunity to show their mettle on the closing day of the Hollywood Park meet when 7 Cal breds meet in the $80,000 On Trust Handicap to run over a distance of seven and a half furlongs on the Hollywood Park’s cushion track on
18 December, 2011.
The 5-year-old gelded son of Unusual Heat, Mensa Heat, has done pretty well since being claimed by Ted H. West on 15 April, and under his supervision the gelding has run eight races and won four of them over distances consistently ranging from five and a
half furlongs to six furlongs.
Peter Redekop’s, Mensa Heat, won a claimer for Ted West on 21 May, 2011, at Hollywood Park on turf under Joe Talamo. The pair covered the distance of six furlongs in 1 minute and 8.58 seconds.
Finished second in an allowance race immediately but came back to winning ways at Hollywood Park in an allowance race at about 6 furlongs on 25 June, 2011.
Followed up by an Allowance claimer at Del Mar on 7 August, where he downed 6 furlongs again in 1 minute and 8.90 seconds on synthetic surface.
On 7 September, 2011, Mensa Heat ran to complete is hat-trick in the Pirate Bounty Stakes, his debut stakes race, and successfully completed his hat-trick by defeating Ain’t No Other in third, who homed in from afar but just couldn’t go the distance when
it mattered.
Mensa Heat on the back of his splendid hat-trick was readied to be introduced to graded stakes company at Santa Anita on 8 October, 2011. Mensa Heat finished third to winner Amazombie in the Grade 1 Ancient Title Stakes, by three quarters of a length.
It was a huge performance by a horse who was running in his first graded stakes ever. However, in his next start Mensa Heat hugely disappointed when he finished seventh in the California Sprint Cup to winner Courtside at Santa Anita Park on 29 October, 2011.
Mensa Heat has won twice at Hollywood Park for his connections, but both those wins came on turf and it will be the first time he will run on Hollywood Park’s cushion track.
