Mensa and Sterling Outlook share the victory at Del Mar in the Pirate’s Bounty Stakes
The race for older sprinters $104,375 Pirate’s Bounty Stakes saw off a dead heat between the 5-year-old Ted West trained Mensa and the Mike Mitchell trained 4-year-old gelding, Sterling Outlook at Del Mar’s synthetic surface on 7 September, 2011.
The 33 to 1 shot Sterling Outlook under jockey Alonso Quinonez jumped out of the gates like a hare out of the traps, shot out in the front to cover the distance of six furlongs against his opponents as quickly as possible.
Along the way setting fast fractions of 22.21 for the opening quarter mile, while he was pursued by his rivals furiously with the intention to dispute for the lead, but the 4-year-old Eurosilve colt kept about his business and covered the half mile distance
in a good 44.90 seconds.
However, the 5-year-old gelding under Jose Talamo had enough in the tank to challenge from behind like he had done in his previous two races, to nail the leader in his tracks to share the victory with Sterling Outlook.
Both of them were timed in 1 minute and 8.84 seconds over a distance of six furlongs on synthetic surface.
Trained by Mike Mitchell for et-al Roger Featherston, Sterling Outlook registered his second win of the 2011 season after being claimed for $40,000 out of his last start.
Previously, has been participating in optional claimers, and he has contested in 10 allowance claimer in the year 2011 alone, coming out victorious once on 20 February, 2011.
On the other hand, Mensa has been on a hot streak, bagging four wins out of five starts, including the Pirate’s Bounty Stakes at Del Mar since being taken for $25,000 back in April.
Since the time he was taken, Mensa has let his record speak for him performances, he started winning 21 May, 2011 in a claimer race over a distance of six furlongs. At Hollywood Park turf course, and from then he never looked back.
Little hiccup in another allowance race over a distance of six furlongs on Hollywood turf where he finished second, apart from that he is beginning to come on his with 3 of 3 in as many starts.
