Question:

Mental Health, When Adopting? (Australia)?

I have bipolar, for nearly 10 years now. I haven't had a manic episode in 5 years, and am completely sane (at least for the most part).

I did have a nasty bout of Post Natal Depression, about 2 1/2 years ago.

I haven't been locked up in a white padded room, or had any violent issues.

I am trying to adopt my Godson, who is in my custody. My lawyer is aware of my mental illness, and so is my case worker.

The problem is for the most parts Bipolar is seen in a very negative light, when for people who are medicated it isn't.

I am worried whether in my adoption process, this may be used against me????

Anyone have any advice?????

  1. wow, i didnt even know that about you!,  your comletely normal and beautiful, they wouldnt dare hold that against you!, xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    happy mothers day! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  2. The fact that you are successfully raising 4 kids should be evidence enough that you qualify to be a Mom

    Stigmas suck

  3. To be honest comparied to me you are completey sane, But never the less I LOVE YOU CHARLI

  4. A friend of mine is bipolar as well, and is on medication religiously. Since being diagnosed and medicated he has also been fine, no temper or out of the ordinary behaviour.

I dont at all see why your bipolar should at all be an issue. Those who matter will be able to vouch for your mental state, your Dr will be a good one to call on for that one.

As long as they see your kids being well cared for, clean, happy and healthy, and are aware of your ability to maintain your bipolar, then they have nothing to hold against you.

You are a great mother, and the ideal mother for him! Try not  to worry.

Now Happy Mother's Day! Go wake the kids and get those slippers!!! Lol.

  5. I agree with Heather it will be the way your 4 children are currently raised that will influence.

I hope that is the case as I do not know your laws and how your judges think over there.

I feel for you so much because this whole thing is just such a stress on you with the aunt trying to fight it .

Try NOT to stress about it all because you do need to relax and show a relaxed front

    IT will be ok (((Hugs)))

  6. don't worry so much hun, the 4 of your own children should be evidence enough for them as to your fitness as a mom ;-)
