I zone out in crowded places involuntarily. Especially at meetings and lectures. What's this called?

  1. does it feel like you aren't here? kinda detatched from your body and everything isn't real? it's called depersonalisation/derealization. if it happens often you could have depersonalisation/derealization disorder

  2. It could be an attention issue (too much stimulation) or it might be a auditory processing issue.  some people cannot process auditory stimulation easily and can get to overload and sort of zap out.  If that is the case, you would want to focus on what ever written material is available.

  3. Do you think it could possibly be social anxiety? It may be that being around people stresses you out so much that you need to dissociate from your surroundings. It is your mind's way of dealing with your stress.

It's a natural reaction; everyone does it at one time or another, but it can become a real problem if it happens all the time. There are treatments that can help you with this.

  4. I used to get this often, my best advice to you would be to visit your doctor. It turns out for me that it was to do with my schizophrenia - I got it sorted out after that. It can be common to a lot of different mental illnesses, anemia, epilepsy or just lack of sleep.

Visit your GP and explain what is happening and how it is affecting you. They will be able to find out the cause and sort it out from there.

    Best of luck.
