  1. they just talk to you

  2. Not all mental health professionals perform the same functions.  There are psychiatrists, who prescribe medication to reduce the effects of mental illness such as depression, anxiety, or OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder); psychologists, who study the specific problems patients face; and psychotherapists (talk-therapists) and social workers, who help patients uncover and address the problems they face by talking them out.

Sounds like she's recommending a psychotherapist, but you should confirm this with our teacher, privately.

There are different psychotherapists and you should change the one with whom you begin if there is friction or you're not getting along.

  3. Therapy is an interaction between you and the therapist working towards common goals in your life.

They are objective and non-judgmental. They are there to listen to you and help you work through issues that may be hindering you.

Try to be as honest as possible with him/her.

  4. Talking w/ a therapist can be a great relief. I go to one, and believe me, I'm always glad to see my conselor. Just talk openly and honestly with them, you will end up feeling better in the long run. I end up talking about some totally off the wall subjects with my therapist, and that's ok.  I think of therapy as a time to finally get sh*t off of my chest and clear my slate so to speak. I wish you all the best! :-)
