  1. Mental toughness is something needed to become an elite athlete. Without it, you may be good, but you will not overcome your competition. Plain and simple

Mental toughness can be many things, for instance:

    - Keeping your cool after a bad call, a bad serve, a bad hit, a bad anything.

    - Never letting the other team see you sweat during a match. (If you get mad and they see it, they will pick you apart until you, almost literally, explode)

    - Playing through a small injury or a cold (If you are in severe pain, get out of there. But if you stub your toe, walk it off and continue playing instead of sitting down or complaining about how your toe hurts 3 serve-receive shanks later.)

    - Trying to understand a coach's reasons for doing what they do instead of complaining or holding a grudge.

    - Or, going to the gym in the off-season even though you don't feel like it.

Many people call mental toughness an intangible. What that means is something you really can't scout unless you are lucky. Many coaches don't see mental toughness until games or special situations. They will try to scout it during tryouts, but it's very hard to emulate.

  2. As a former athelete I think working out IE- running and lifting weights always helped my confidence and mental toughness. Also practising extra hard in my specific sports' craft is a must. As the old addage goes "practice makes perfect."

  3. get good grades!

  4. yes it is!!! try to either take all ur madness out at the ball or not concentrate on anything else but the game.

  5. You can try to think of what you have to do it the hard situations.

  6. You always have to go into a game knowing your going to win...and knowing what you have to do to win is part of that.... know the other team (their strengths and weaknesses)... thats part of having a good mind set.... Mental toughness comes easier to some people than it does to others....You have to be confident enough to know that if you or your team mate makes a mistake that you'll bounce back from it and get it right next time.... You can't be distracted by one mistake because all it will do is make you make other mistakes. Another part of mental toughness is giving it everything you have when your behind and not giving up.... As far as improving in these areas just make sure you go into the game focused and confident.

  7. VERY important.

There is a book "Mental Toughness Training for Volleyball: Maximizing Technical and Mental Mechanics (Paperback)" that would tell you how to train your athletes.

  8. kinda....all u have 2 do is concentrate if u can't concentrate then good luck

  9. Very. If you have a crappy mood after a measly mistake you are prone to now get along with your team mates. And if you dont get along with your team mates, communication can be blocked and with out communication, your team can completely fall apart on the court. Mental toughness is key.
