Mercedes' MGP-W02 car to debut Renault style side exhaust in Spain – Formula 1 News
Formula 1 Mercedes team is set to introduce Renault style side exhausts in their ‘MGP-W02’ car for the Spanish Grand Prix, scheduled for May 22 at the Circuit de Catalunya.
There were already rumours about the Petronas-sponsored team that it is perhaps closer than any other to imitating Red Bull’s ‘RB7’ car flexible front wing.
The team boss Ross Brawn has discussed the Spanish race upgrades and said that he is hopeful some aerodynamic developments in their new car may have brought a positive step towards their improving performance.
Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg said, "Most teams are bringing new things, but I think ours could be better than the others to bring us a little closer to the top."
Meanwhile, McLaren is set to move forward in Spain in the important new area of its car’s engine mapping settings for a new blown exhaust. However, their driver Jenson Button said, "For Turkey we'd planned to introduce a couple of useful upgrades, but for
several reasons we weren't able to get them onto the car."
For Mercedes GP, several new changes in their car are necessary for their upbeat results in the remaining races of 2011 Formula 1 season. The team driver Michael Schumacher is still unable to perform well on the F1 grid. Due to his worst start in the ongoing
season, he is unhappy as he claims that his return in Formula 1 after his three-year retirement has not been positive for him.
The team kicked off to a poor start in the season, as both drivers, Schumacher and Nico Rosberg were unable to finish their race among the strong rivals. Due to several issues in their cars, they failed to deliver their best run on the grid, in the first
two races of the season, held in Australia and Malaysia, respectively.
The Chinese Grand Prix proved lucky for Rosberg, as he put in a positive performance for his team towards their season’s success and finished his fifth fastest run. While, for the seven-time world champion, Schumacher the race was disappointing as he could
not make improvements in his running.
The team took part in recent Turkish race weekend, with hopes of winning their first podium position. However, due to the un-supportive performance of the car, the German driver was unable to get pole position for the team and again ended his race at the
fifth place. The car still requires significant upgrades and modifications to become more competitive with the other top tier teams.
Mercedes is hopeful that the new updates in Barcelona will provide them some competitive and positive results. It will be interesting to see how these upgrades work in the up-coming race weekend.
