Mercedes' Nico Rosberg terms DRS a success: Formula One news
Mercedes’ driver Nico Rosberg has said that the Drag Reduction System (DRS) has been one of the most brilliant ideas ever by the sport’s governing body, the FIA, in the history of Formula One. He also praised the Pirelli tyres for making the competition
more exciting and challenging for the teams.
A thrilled Rosberg stated, “F1 has done a brilliant job. How exciting have the races been? They have been stunning. There is nobody saying we are having boring races. There is overtaking left, right, and centre - everywhere. So, they have done a really,
really good job and that is the most important thing that needs to be highlighted.”
He further added, “The people in charge have made the sport from one year to the next so much more exciting, and that is awesome for the fans and everything. It is really cool, isn't it? It is the tyres and the rear wing.”
Most teams were uncertain about the impact of the Pirelli tyres and the DRS before the start of the 2011 season. However, things have worked out quite well for everyone and the fans have witnessed some absorbing races.
The Chinese Grand Prix was probably the best race in the past few years, as there were a lot of overtaking opportunities in it. Rosberg also enjoyed an electrifying race, overtaking a lot of cars and leading the race for a handful of laps. The German eventually
finished in fifth place, scoring 10 points in the race, which was his best result this season.
Although the young German rated DRS as a success, Ferrari’s team principal Stefano Domenicali claimed that it was too early to make that decision. The Italian claimed that though everyone was entitled to their own opinion, only time would tell how successful
the system really was.
According to Domenicali, the tyres have played a bigger role in making the races more exciting. He stated that DRS could only be activated in a particular zone and that didn’t boost overtaking. The drivers are required to stay closer to the car ahead in
order to activate their rear wing, and they only managed to do that in China because of the tyres.
