Mercedes 4matic? 2003 c240?

Question

is it possible to turn the 4 wheel drive on my benz on and off...or does the 4wd turn on by itself when the roads are rougher? thanks

THe 4wheel drive senses wheel spin and most likely you will acelerate with 4 wheels and when cruising for fuel efficiency, change to 2 wheel mode and will shift between different wheels in corners
