Mercedes GP: Nothing to lose, all to gain
After having started the year with under par performances and coming up with quite disappointing finishes at mid season, Mercedes GP is finally looking forward to end the year with some remarkable feats. As the Formula One caravan now heads for the last
and the final round of the season to be held this weekend at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, the UK based team aims to give nothing but its best.
The team management says that they actually have nothing to lose at this stage, neither of its drivers is in a winning situation, nor the team could have its position improved in the Constructors’ Championship. Yet the entire squad is determined to wrap
up the season at a good note. The team has already sealed fourth position in the Constructors' Championship with its 202 points so far.
Michael Schumacher, who has come back to the sport after a period of three years, embraced a very tough 2010 season. However, he failed the expectations of many, as the team failed to provide him with a competitive car and the 7-timeWorld Champion was unable
to get the best out of what he was handed with.
However, as the season came towards its last and final stages, the German was able to show more consistent performances than the entire season. Now, having wrapped the Korean Grand Prix at sixth place and the last week’s Brazilian round at 4th,
has not only raised the expectations of the fans but also of his team for the forthcoming season. Currently, he stands at ninth place in the championship tally, having scored 72 points so far.
Regardless of his standing, as 41-year-old enters the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, he is adamant to give one of his best performances of the season on a track which is entirely new to him.
While talking to the media earlier today Schumacher said, "The final race weekend will be exciting for me as I will be driving this impressive circuit for the first time. Obviously the main focus of the fans and the media will be on the championship fight
so we will be able to work calmly and concentrate on our own weekend. I'm sure that everyone in the team is motivated to deliver a good last performance of the season."
On the other hand, the junior German team driver, Nico Rosberg, has been very unlucky in the last few races. Despite of giving a far better season to the team as compared to his teammate, he was only able to bag eight points from the last three Grands Prix.
Still, he stands at 7th place in the drivers’ contention with 130 points and hopes to get back to his previous form in the last round of the season.
While talking to the media, the 25-year-old said, "The track is interesting to drive with a unique layout with the unusual pit lane exit and the day/night programme makes a change from the usual format of a race weekend. We hope to finish the season with
another good result here before looking ahead to next season which will definitely be stronger for us."
Moreover, the Mercedes team boss Norbert Haug talked to the press earlier today saying that Mercedes GP would not be taking anything for granted.
He is resolute that the team would drag what is the best possible with their current package technically. He continued telling that the drivers especially Schumacher has given very strong finishes in the last few races, and he is looking forward for a similar
performance pattern this weekend as well.
He concluded saying, “It would be a nice reward for the team to conclude this very long and tough season, which saw everyone give their all, with a reasonable result."
