Mercedes GP PETRONAS unveils its striking new silver car, W02
The Brackley based Mercedes GP PETRONAS unveiled its 2011 car Tuesday morning at Valencia. The team’s new car called ‘W02,’ is adorned with a striking silver livery, glaring at the team’s paddock this morning. Not only the interior and the functioning of
the new package seemed very impressive, but also its outlook was far more dazzling than last year’s car.
At the promotional event today, Norbert Haug, the President in-charge of all Mercedes-Benz motorsport activities said, "The new Silver Arrow has little in common with its immediate predecessor."
The car will hit the track shortly, as the first pre-season test session is scheduled to begin shortly at the Valencia track. The team driver, Nico Rosberg will test the new car at the first day, while his teammate and the legendary Formula 1 driver, Michael
Schumacher will be seen behind the Mercedes wheel on Thursday, at the second day of practice.
Mercedes GP made its debut last season amidst immense fanfare and hype. The English Motorsport Engineer and Brawn GP Team Boss, Ross Brawn signed a deal with Mercedes Benz to form the team. He also re-introduced the seven-time World Champion, Schumacher
who left the sport at the end of 2006 season, alongside the young German driver, Nico Rosberg. Although the ingredients seemed perfect for a top team, yet the expected results were not achieved. The team that had won both the Drivers’ as well as the Constructors’
Championship only a year back in 2009, failed to deliver a competitive car to its drivers, while the race veteran Schumacher was hardly ever able to bring the best out of what he was handed with.
As the teams returned to the grids after the mid-season summer break during the 2010 season, Brawn announced to stop any further development work on the team’s car and shifted all attention towards building the next season’s package. The Briton explained
that both the championships were already out of the team’s reach and that it was useless fighting over a lost battle.
Being amongst the earliest teams to begin developing the new car, a very competitive package is expected from the team this year. Moreover, both the team drivers, Schumacher and Rosberg are adamant to bag as many podiums and race wins this season as they
can.
