Mercedes GP boss Ross Brawn: Our objective is to improve car for future – Formula 1 news
Mercedes GP boss Ross Brawn has said that at the moment the team’s objective is to improve their car for future following the disappointing start to the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Brawn added that they are happy with the results of the 2011 Spa and Monza races, but the team is expecting more from the Mercedes engine in the rest of the 2011 campaign.
The Petronas-sponsored team kicked off to disappointing 2011 F1 season. Due to lack of their MGP-W02 car’s pace, both of the drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg were unable to show their best possible performances on the grid in the initial races
of the ongoing season.
The team driver Nico Rosberg struggled with his car in a few races, but since the last couple of races, he failed to fight against his rivals.
Rosberg’s teammate Schumacher is back on the grid since the last couple of races. After the Spa race, the team again received better results from the seven-time world champion in the recently held Italian Grand Prix.
The 42-year-old driver took a strong start in the Monza race and after a close fight with McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton during the race, he completed his run in the fifth spot behind the Brit in the end.
The team boss, Brawn stated that after Spa, the Monza race was lucky for them, as Schumacher successfully scored decent points for his team during the Grand Prix.
Talking to reporters, Brawn said, “Of course it was nice to see our car leading a race, but in reality we knew that it would be very difficult to bring it home. Spa is a track that makes your wing system very vulnerable when you are up at the front and frankly
we know that we haven’t got a strong enough car yet.”
He discussed Rosberg’s accident in the first lap of the Monza race and added, “No, I don’t think that he said anything in that direction because he is realistic. His car was probably a second slower than the cars around him. We’ve got to find that second
for next season.”
Brawn talked about Mercedes engine and mentioned that he believes their engine is great and it can win them many races.
Apart from that, he stated that if they look at the team’s performance so far, they just need to have strong car for their best finish on the grid. In addition, he said that Mercedes have a great drivers’ line-up this year and that they are happy as well
as satisfied with them.
Mercedes GP are busy working on their next year’s car. However, the team is sure they can take a strong start to the 2012 Formula 1 season with their more competitive package.
He also discussed the tyres and said that he thinks tyres are part of the challenge of Formula 1. Brawn added that they are satisfied with the working of Pirelli tyres during the races until now and that it really did a fantastic job for everyone in its
first year.
Mercedes have started to focus on the setup of their 2012 car since the last few months.
After completing 13 rounds of the season, Mercedes GP are at the fourth place behind Ferrari with 108 points in the 2011 constructors’ championship.
Let’s see whether the team takes a strong start in the 2012 F1 season with their more competitive package.
