Mercedes GP confident about future with Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg - Formula 1 news
Mercedes GP is looking for stability to be able to challenge races in the next Formula 1 seasons, says the team’s director of motorsport Norbert Haug.
Mercedes GP took over Brawn Grand Prix in 2009 and as yet has to score a win, while the team before being taken over by Mercedes had won both the constructors’ and the drivers’ championship.
The Petronas-sponsored team has acquired Aldo Costa and Geoff Willis to add strength to its technical department.
Haug though has realised that the bid to be a front runner at the Grand Prix will be a slow process and will take time. “We are going to keep establishing our new Silver Arrows works team in Formula One,” he told Eurosport Deutschland.
“Our development and our learning will bring us upwards gradually, step by step, from the fourth power at the moment to third, second and ultimately to position number one. This can be achieved only through years of hard and focused work. The current world
champions (Red Bull) took five years before their first success.”
Mercedes GP driver Michael Schumacher’s contract with the team will be ended in 2012. But, Haug has made it clear that the current drivers, Nico Rosberg and Schumacher being the other one, are an integral to the team and will be looking to win races.
Mercedes has earlier announced that they have faith in Schumacher’s abilities and are looking forward to his services as a driver beyond his current deal which ends in 2012.
He said that the team is completely satisfied with their current drivers’ line-up. He added that he believes once they are able to give them a car which will be challenging, the drivers would start giving the results the team needs requires.
He further added about Schumacher being an important asset, “He is a motivator through and through.”
The seven-time world champion had a plan with Ferrari, where he worked hard for five years to win his first title in back.
Mercedes team would be looking to finish the ongoing season with decent points. The next race begins from Friday, October 28, 2011 at the Buddh International circuit, in India.
