Mercedes GP driver Michael Schumacher says 2011 Belgium Grand Prix was nice battle – Formula 1 news
Mercedes GP driver Michael Schumacher has said that the 2011 Belgium Grand Prix was a nice battle for him following his disappointing last few races of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Schumacher added that his decision to start his Belgium race on hard tyres by Pirelli was right at the moment. In addition, he stated that the decision of using hard tyres pushed him back in the championship battle and he successfully covered the massive
gap during the raceday after the disappointing Qualifiers at Spa-Francorchamps as well.
The seven-time world champion described the Belgium Grand Prix as a special day, as he successfully made a lot of progress on his 20th anniversary grand prix.
Schumacher commented, “That gave me the edge and the possibility to overtake because on equal tyres that wouldn't have been possible. But we took the risk to take the hard tyres in the beginning and that paid off.”
He went on to mention, “It was an exciting race with lots of bits and pieces flying right after the start. So I was lucky I wasn't in the middle of that one and I was able to avoid this and from there on we had a great strategy. Certainly I am feeling happy
because it is a special weekend for me. It didn't start too well yesterday with the qualifying but luckily it finished great in the race.”
The 42-year-old driver did not have a good qualifying round on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at the Spa circuit in Belgium. He had a wheel nut issue in his MGP-W02 car during the Qualifiers and due to that, he crashed in the first session of Qualifiers.
Schumacher started his Grand Prix from the 24th place on the grid and after putting all of his efforts, he finished his race behind Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso. He had a gap of 47.4 seconds from Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel, who was
the winner of the Belgium race weekend.
The Petronas-sponsored team driver covered most of his positions in the early stages of the race.
Let’s see whether Schumacher retains his position in the next race weekends or not following his successful Belgium race.
