Mercedes GP team principal Ross Brawn praises FIA move to ban blown diffuser – Formula 1 news
Mercedes GP team principal Ross Brawn has said that the ban on the Blown Diffuser by the International Automobile Federation from the Silverstone Grand Prix of the 2011 season is the right decision.
Brawn added that the Diffusers have always been a problem in the recent past and according to the FIA, one of the teams stated that they will protest if Diffusers were not banned.
Mercedes’ team boss added that the FIA handled the situation brilliantly as they gave some time to the Formula 1 teams before the ban was imposed so that they find the right setup for their cars without the Diffuser.
Brawn said, “I think the time we were given to resolve it was a good compromise, because the teams concerned could have protested it a few races ago, but they agreed to hold off and let everyone find a solution and get to where we are today.”
Brawn added that the Diffuser could have gone on in the 2011 season but after Hispania Racing Team stated that they will protest if the Diffuser was not banned, the FIA decided to pull the plug on the technology which is not wrong in any way.
“We all know what happened with the diffusers a couple of years ago. This is different because the FIA were completely happy with the legality of diffusers, but now they are saying, 'somebody made a point and we can see it is a valid point so we want to
control this',” stated Brawn.
The issue about the Blown Diffuser was raised recently when the FIA found out that this engine specification was against the rules. However after the teams demanded some time to rethink the design, the FIA postponed the decision.
The Silverstone Grand Prix on July 10 will be the first of the 2011 season without the off throttle Diffuser boost.
It will be interesting to see which team stands where in the qualifiers and the race as the top five teams of the track are expected to get hurt from the Diffuser ban.
