Mercedes GP to show its true pace soon – Nico Rosberg
Mercedes GP’s Nico Rosberg has recently stated that the team’s new car, Mercedes W02, had a lot of pace in it but the team was unable to show it at the Australian Grand Prix, since a lot went wrong there.
Rosberg said while talking to the media, “Australia was not a good start for us. But there were a few issues in Australia, especially reliability, which we didn't get right throughout the weekend so that really hurt us,”
However, he claims that the team has been working tirelessly since the Australian Grand Prix in order to make sure that they avoid a repeat at the Malaysian Grand Prix which is expected to take place on Sunday, April 10.
After the pre-season test session period, it was believed that Mercedes GP would be one of the top running teams of the 2011 Formula 1 season and they would potentially be able to challenge the title runners Red Bull Racing Team, McLaren and Ferrari for
the titles.
As a result, the expectations from Mercedes were quite high but unfortunately, both of the team’s drivers, Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg, retired out of the race after their respective cars got damaged badly.
“Also set-up wise, and that is mechanical, aerodynamic, everything, we just did not seem to find the right path (in Australia) on that, so a lot of effort has gone into making things better. We are a really strong team so we will get there,” added Nico.
Nevertheless, Rosberg has a pretty good record at the Sepang circuit as a result of which he is hoping for another solid run at the Malaysian Grand Prix this year as well.
“It is definitely a track I really enjoy. Just the characteristics really. There is a bit of everything here and also I have some great memories. I led my first race here, finished third last year in a Mercedes so it is always nice to come back here,” said
the German.
Other than that, he stated that Mercedes GP is not aware of where it stands at the moment as compared to the top running teams and therefore, the team cannot vow to perform alongside the top running teams yet.
He believes that the team needs to perform at its best and get the most out of its new car. After they are done setting up their car and scoring some results, the team will then set some goals for itself.
Therefore, the team is not worried about Red Bull Racing Team and even if the reigning world champions increase their lead at the Malaysian Grand Prix, Mercedes GP won’t be affected much in terms of points.
