Mercedes GP upgrades for Spain include Renault exhaust and Red Bull front wing: Reports
The 2011 Formula 1 season continues in Barcelona with Spanish Grand Prix scheduled for next week and the technology-copying trend will continue with Mercedes GP.
A report reveals that Mercedes will be bringing Renault’s exhaust system and Red Bull front wing in their 2011 car, MGP-W02.
Mercedes’ camp has commented previously that some upgrades will be seen in the car for the Spanish Grand Prix.
Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn said, “For Barcelona we have some aerodynamic developments that should bring us a step in performance.”
Mercedes’ driver, Nico Rosberg also gave a hunch about the new upgrades and said, “Most teams are bringing new things, but I think ours could be better than the others to bring us a little closer to the top.”
After having a poor start to the 2011 season in Australia, Mercedes’ performance improved dramatically in the Chinese Grand Prix where Rosberg was close to a podium finish when a fuel hiccup stood between him and the third place finish. Nico’s teammate Michael
Schumacher also started to find some footing among the top ten drivers.
In the Turkish Grand Prix, the performance graph of Mercedes took another step forward when Rosberg qualified in third place behind Red Bull duo of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.
The young German started the race impressively but ended in an eventful fifth position just ahead of McLaren’s Jenson Button.
Now, Mercedes have chosen the two most effective technologies of the 2011 season and will try them out on their car in the Spanish Grand Prix. Ross Brawn had his eyes on Red Bull’s flexible front wing when he said that teams should follow them or tell the
International Automobile Federation (FIA) about it.
On the other hand, Renault’s exhaust has been admired by many teams and also by the legendary technical director, Adrian Newey of Red Bull. Mercedes will now use the same type of exhaust to boost their performance.
As far as the new upgrades are concerned, it will be interesting to see how far the new systems will help the Mercedes team to build some momentum in the 2011 season.
