Mercedes GP’s Ross Brawn says extending 2011 Formula 1 season until December too much – Formula 1
Mercedes GP team boss Ross Brawn has said that extending the 2011 Formula 1 season in order to accommodate the Bahrain Grand Prix until mid-December would be a bit too much for all the teams.
He said if the extension takes place, the teams would not get any time for holidays.
“That [December] is too much. Our guys have been working since January and to then give them no time for a holiday until Christmas is not acceptable,” Brawn told the media.
The World Motor Sport Council is expected hold a meeting this Friday in order to decide the fate of the Bahrain Grand Prix as it still has not been decided whether it will take place this season or not.
However, if the officials decide to hold it this year, then the meeting would further discuss a possible slot for the race which according to Bernie Ecclestone is going to be the October 30 as a replacement for the Indian Grand Prix.
The Indian Grand Prix as a result would get more time for preparation and then according to Bernie, the race will be held on December 13 as the season finale.
McLaren principal Martin Whitmarsh on the other hand admitted that if the race is rescheduled, then the teams will have no choice and they would have to attend it.
“I think it's tough on the team, simple as that. I think the teams will go to the races that are on the calendar, that's for sure, but I think it makes it a very long season. The guys started working very hard in mid-January, building cars to go testing
and it will make it a very, very long season for them,” said Whitmarsh.
However, it is still believed that holding the Bahrain Grand Prix might not be safe as the country is currently going through a tough time. With the violent protests and clashes, holding a race and ensuring the safety of the teams and everyone involved in
the race might not be possible for the organisers of the event.
