Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg hails Drag Reduction System and Pirelli as “best idea ever for Formula 1”
Young German driver, Nico Rosberg has hailed the movable rear wing and the rapidly degrading Pirelli tyres. Nico stated that Formula 1 is no longer a boring sport because the officials have done a good job to bring more overtaking to the races.
In the first three races of the 2011 Formula 1 season, the Drag Reduction System or movable rear wing has shown more overtaking occurring then the whole 2010 season. DRS along with Pirelli tyres have made Formula 1 more of a strategic battle than just speed.
Talking about the innovations, Nico commented, “the rear wing – best idea ever probably, for this sport. No? And tyres also. Pirelli, everybody has been criticising them, but they have made our sport spectacular. So that is cool.”
Nico, who was the race leader in the Chinese Grand Prix for most part of the race, expressed his feelings about the modern Formula 1 and said, “There is nobody saying we are having boring races. There is overtaking left, right, and centre - everywhere. So,
they have done a really, really good job and that is the most important thing that needs to be highlighted.”
After having a dull and uneventful 2010 Formula 1 season, the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile or FIA decided to make some changes in the 2011 cars and tracks. The changes made to the car were the movable rear wing, Kinetic Energy Recovery System
and new Pirelli tyres.
The wing works in a way that it reduces the drag on the car by opening up a hatch at the rear panel. KERS stores the heat energy generated by the brakes and can give a boost of 80 horsepower when required.
Rosberg’s comments come in light of his most recent performance in the Chinese Grand Prix, where he qualified in fourth and then ended in fifth place in his MGP-W02.
Meanwhile Ferrari’s team principal Stefano Domenicali thinks that the Pirelli rubber is the most crucial change in the 2011 rules.
Nevertheless, one thing is for sure, the innovations of 2011 have overshadowed the element of speed in the car, and played a part in taking it out from the equation, and the sport.
