Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg named the winner of the 2011 Bandini Trophy – Formula 1 update
Mercedes driver, Nico Rosberg, recently won the 2011 Bandini Trophy. The Trofeo Lorenzo Bandini is a tribute to the leading Italian driver of the 60s who burned to death during the Monaco Grand Prix in 1967 after his car crashed and caught on fire.
Lewis Hamilton won the trophy in 2010 and Sebastian Vettel won it in 2009, while Robert Kubica won it in 2008.
The trophy originated in 1992 after the 25th death anniversary of Bandini and is now organized annually by the council of Bandini’s home town in Brisighella, Italy. This award is not presented for a tournament or a race and the trophy is awarded
to drivers for their dedication to motorsports, spirit of competition and achievements.
It is traditionally awarded on the weekend of the San Marino Grand Prix by Bandini’s widow and the inspirational feature of the trophy is that it is not awarded on the basis of results but on the basis of how results were achieved.
It has been confirmed by the organizers of this competition that Nico Rosberg is going to receive this year’s Bandini trophy in Brisighella on the 5th of June. According to some reports, it has been revealed that Rosberg might driver for 12 kilometers
between Faenza and Brisighella in an F1 Mercedes car or a Formula 1 safety car.
Nico Rosberg gave an outstanding performance in the 2010 Formula 1 season as he finished in seventh place just two points behind the Ferrari driver, Felipe Massa, in the drivers’ standings.
Team Mercedes is formerly known as BrawnGP and they were able to secure both drivers’ and constructors’ titles in its debut season in 2009. The team changed its name to Mercedes GP in 2010 though and unfortunately, they were unable to deliver a strong car
for the 2010 Formula 1 season.
However, the team signed the seven time world champion, Michael Schumacher, for the 2010 season but the German was unable to give a winning performance. Michael finished in ninth place in the drivers’ standings in 2010 but he is confident that he will be
able to give a promising performance in the 2011 Formula 1 season as his team has now developed a car that would suite his driving style.
Scoring almost 70 points more than Michael Schumacher is a huge achievement for Nico as Michael is a seven time world champion. However, it is going to be interesting to see how Rosberg performs in the 2011 Formula 1 season as compared to his teammate as
it is expected that Team Mercedes is going to be one of the top running teams of the 2011 season.
