Mercedes are too optimistic about 2013 – Formula 1
Mercedes have faced immense technical and tyre management issues in the 2012 Formula 1 season because of which their drivers, Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg could not score competitive points for their team.
Schumacher made his comeback in F1 with the Brackley based team in 2010. However, the seven-time world champion had been completely outclassed by his compatriot, Rosberg in the last two seasons.
Although, the record championship holder performed comparatively well in this season and managed to secure an impressive third podium finish in the European Grand Prix, but he could not achieve more as he struggled with many problems in his car.
On the other hand, Rosberg has performed convincingly well for his team and scored his maiden race win in the Chinese GP.
It will be important to note that Schumacher has decided to say goodbye to the sport at the end of this year. Moreover, Mercedes have signed a new multi-year contract with Lewis Hamilton of McLaren who is going to replace the veteran German driver in the
next season.
Team principal of the Silver Arrows, Ross Brawn has said that they will work really hard during the winter testing so as to provide Hamilton with the most competitive car in the next season.
Furthermore, Brawn said that their aim is to win the world championship title and asserted that their next year’s driver line-up is capable enough of achieving their goal.
“I hope so,” Brawn said when asked by AUTOSPORT if Hamilton's prediction were too negative. “Obviously we're working very hard to give both him and Nico the opportunity to win and take pole positions. That's our ambition, our objective.”
In addition, he said that even though they are well aware of the fact that it is very hard to come up with a competent car in the coming year to compete with their rivals after struggling with huge technical issues during this season. Nonetheless, he said
that they are still positively looking forward to accomplish their objectives.
“It's obviously critical we improve from where we are. We're going to try if we don't hit all our objectives next year. You never know what other people will do,” he said.
“I think Lewis was just playing things down. I'm sure in his heart he wants to win and set pole positions, but he understands the journey we've got to go on,” he added.
Conversely, the 2008 world champion has said that he may struggle with his new team in the next season as it will certainly take some time to make the initial adjustments. Additionally, he said that he cannot win races right from the start of the coming
season and will have to wait until Mercedes will be able to develop a car which can match the pace of the opponents.
The 27-year-old has enjoyed great success with the Woking based team which is surely more competitive as compared to Mercedes. Thus, there are many who think that the British driver may regret his decision about changing his team in the future.
At present, all the teams are eagerly looking forward to take the most out of the winter testing so as to come up with the competent cars in the next season and it will interesting to see how Mercedes perform with their changed driver line-up.
