Mercedes boss Ross Brawn: V6 will bring fresh manufacturers into F1 – Formula 1 news
Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn has stated that the new engine regulations imposed by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) about the V6 engines to be introduced from the 2014 season is a very important move for the Formula 1 sport.
Brawn added that no new engine manufacturer was going to join Formula 1 for V8 engines for which the FIA has made the right move to introduce V6 which will attract more engine manufacturers in the near future.
He further added that from the 2014 season, engines are going to play a vital role in Formula 1 sport which currently is taken over by the aerodynamic efficiencies.
Currently, Formula 1 has four engine manufacturers, one of which is Renault who stated clearly that they will leave the sport if V8’s are not let go.
Talking about the V6 technology to be introduced for the 2014 season, Brawn stated, “We're not going to get manufacturers coming in and run with a V8 normally-aspirated engine if nobody is interested. So this [V6] is a more relevant specification, and gives
a fresh opportunity, for manufacturers to join, and that's a vital reason why we needed a new engine.”
Brawn further added that the engines are going to play a vital role in Formula 1 once again.
He said, “One of the exciting things in the future is that engines are going to come back into the equation. They're very sterile in a way, very similar, so I'm really excited that engines are again going to be part of the equation, something where we can
create relevance again.”
The FIA initially decided to bring V4s into play from the 2013 season but Formula 1 teams stated that it will be too harsh a call for the fans. After discussions and conferences, it was decided that V6s will be brought in Formula 1 from the 2014 season.
Although the engine sound will never be the same in 2014, but it will be interesting to see what positives do the turbo technology brings with itself in future.
