Mercedes close in on pace of McLaren and Red Bull Racing Team
After an eventful day in Malaysia, Mercedes GP was able to score some pretty good results during the two free practice sessions of the day and as a result, the team proved that they have improved their car noticeably for the upcoming Malaysian race of the
2011 Formula 1 season.
During the first free practice session, Michael Schumacher scored the 3rd fastest time of the session and surprised the rest of the teams on the grid by finishing behind the McLaren of Lewis Hamilton in the timesheets.
The 2nd session went pretty well for the team as well as Michael Schumacher finished behind the two McLaren drivers and Red Bull drivers in 5th place in the timesheets, while his teammate Nico Rosberg wasn’t far behind either.
Nico scored the 7th fastest time of the session and it seems that the team’s chances in the Malaysian Grand Prix are much better as compared to their Australian Grand Prix run.
“We had a pretty good first day on track here in Sepang. We definitely made a step in the right direction, we were closer to our level of performance from Barcelona than in Melbourne, and I am hopeful there will be more to come”, said Michael.
The team had a disastrous opening to the 2011 Formula 1 season as both of the team’s drivers retired out of the race and even during the qualifying session, Michael was not able to qualify for the final qualifying session Q3.
After a pointless finish to the Australian Grand prix, the team vowed to improve its performance and rule out its mistakes before heading to the Malaysia Grand Prix, which they achieved successfully apparently.
“We had two typical Friday sessions, trying out a lot of things for future developments, and it looks we can make further improvements. Today, our aerodynamics and our KERS system worked very well, and I look forward to more to come in the next two days”,
the 7 time world champion stated.
Both of the Mercedes drivers were pleased with their performance and they are hoping for the best possible results at the upcoming qualifying session and race in Malaysia.
