Mercedes did not make an attempt to lure the 2010 Formula 1 champion Sebastian Vettel
In 2010, Sebastian Vettel became the youngest Formula 1 drivers’ champion in the history of the championship when he secured his title with Red Bull Racing, who won their first Constructors’ title since their debut 6 years ago.
The team headed by Christian Horner has Adrian Newey by its side (as Chief Technical Officer) who is one of the best technical directors the sport has to offer. Most critics believe that the team won mainly because of Adrian’s efforts and the team is expected
to perform at its best till they have him by their side.
However, Sebastian Vettel reportedly revealed that he wants to join a more reliable and consistent team and he stated that he dreams of driving for Ferrari or Mercedes one day. After his statement, Luca di Montezemolo, Ferrari’s
Principal, stated that Ferrari would love to have Sebastian by its side and they hope to sign him soon as well.
Mercedes, on the other hand, did not even try to attract the 2010 Formula 1 world champion in any way, according to motorsport chief Norbert Haug.
Responding to statements from Red Bull’s advisor Helmut Marko, who made a statement in the media that Team Mercedes was after Sebastian despite “having a contract with us,” Haug said: “We have not made world champion Sebastian
Vettel an offer. We have exactly the drivers we wanted in Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg.”
He believes, however, that unless Red Bull offer Vettel a competitive package year after year, he would sooner or later shift allegiances to a more lucrative team.
According to some reports, Vettel has been linked with a future move to Ferrari but according to Marko, Sebastian Vettel might not be ready to race alongside the two-time world champion Fernando Alonso. It also might create preferential
problems for the team.
Most of the top running drivers are looking for consistency rather than “one-hit wonders” and Sebastian is no different either. If he wants to secure titles and keep winning consistently, he would have to decide carefully about
his future.
