Mercedes AMG driver Schumacher says 2012 weaving rules merely a ‘clarification’ – Formula 1 news
Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher believes that the new changes in the rules of overtaking by the FIA are just a clarification of the existing rules for the governance of the drivers’ behaviour on track.
During the last season, Schumacher was accused of weaving Lewis Hamilton while defending his position in the Italian Grand Prix. Nevertheless, the German driver was not penalised for his on track behaviour but the update was made to the rule for the sake
of eliminating the ambiguities.
The changing which comes into effect for the forthcoming 2012 Formula 1 season declares, “Drivers may no longer move back onto the racing line having moved off it to defend a position.”
“It's not really a rule change. It's a clarification and a precise rule for everyone to understand what exactly you are allowed to do and not to do,” said Schumacher.
Moreover, Schumacher’s teammate Nico Rosberg expressed the same comments as his teammate and stated that the new rules are more specific.
“Now once you are overtaking you are not allowed to change sides twice. It's always been like that but now it's more clear on the rules. So for all the people that are making sure that everyone is behaving properly,” he pointed out.
“They can know exactly when someone has done wrong and they can penalise him immediately,” said Rosberg.
Both the teammates agreed that the new rules of FIA will surely help in penalizing those who while defending their positions overstep the mark.
FIA’s new rule regarding the overtaking will surely help in making the much needed improvements in the driving on the track and will keep the negative aggression down hence ensuring the safety of the drivers on track.
Moreover, the clarity of the new rules will provide fair grounds the forthcoming 2012 Formula 1 championship where each and every driver will have a fair chance to prove himself on the track and if there will be any wrong overtaking or wrong defence of the
position by any driver, he will be penalised immediately.
Furthermore, the idea of penalizing will certainly result in reinforcement of the rules on track in the upcoming season.
