Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg expects tough fight for pole position in Canada – Formula 1 news
Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg has said that he is expecting a very tough fight for the pole position in the qualifying of the 2013 Canadian Grand Prix after a tight Friday practice at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Rosberg set the fifth best time of 1 minute and 15.249 seconds in FP2 of the Canadian GP. Moreover, he stood ahead of Felipe Massa of Ferrari and behind Mark Webber of Red Bull Racing. In contrast, his teammate, Lewis Hamilton came second in the timesheets
and was only 0.012 seconds slower than Fernando Alonso of Ferrari.
Despite claiming consecutive poles in the last three races, the German driver has expressed that he is expecting a tough battle in the qualifying.
“It looks quite tight out there in general,” he said. “Fortunately I'm feeling good with car in rain and in dry, so from that point of view it doesn't really matter but for sure it is going to be tough. I think maybe this track has brought things closer
together because it's just very different and has lower downforce.”
In addition, he said that they needed to work hard to resolve their issues in order to improve their race pace to come up stronger in this weekend’s race. Nevertheless, he expressed that he is hoping for a good race on Sunday.
“We know that that's the case in Montreal so we will have to analyse how it went and try to optimise the car. It really is down to race pace, weather and if it all comes together, but I think I can have good weekend,” he added.
Currently, the 27-year-old is standing at 6th place finish in the Drivers’ Championship with 47 points. Besides, he is ahead of Massa and behind his main rival, Webber. He has impressed everyone with his amazing qualifying performance in the preceding three
rounds. Additionally, he scored an incredible win in the Monaco GP. However, he faced retirement in Australia and China because of which he lost some important points in the championship fight.
It will be exciting to see how he shows up in the approaching races.
