Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg to focus on strong pace during third free practice – Formula 1 news
Mercedes driver, Nico Rosberg, has decided to focus more on the pace of his car during the third free practice session and the qualifying round which follows on Saturday, September 24, at the Marina Bay street circuit.
The driver made the statement after the evening session of the second free practice session held on Friday, September 23. The German driver could only secure a 15th position for himself at the end of FP2 while his team-mate Michael Schumacher
was at 6th.
Even though Rosberg was running on a higher fuel level than this team-mate Schumacher, he lost pace. Rosberg said, “It wasn't a perfect day but a decent day for me and hopefully we can make further progress tomorrow."
The first practice session did not turn out to be as conclusive for the teams as they had hoped for. The start was delayed by half an hour as the track curbs where being tightened.
It was not a particularly good drive for the Mercedes team as well as they did not get enough time to check their tyres. However, the second practice session turned out to be a little better for the team.
With a Red Bull pace that seemed to be quite promising throughout the second free practice session, the Mercedes squad is now set on building their own pace. The team aims at working to get the best out of the car so that they can perform to their full potential
on race day.
Rosberg thinks that they still have time before the race to learn more about their car and is optimistic that they will be able to use this to their advantage.
Team Principal, Ross Brawn, said, “The Marina Bay Circuit is an extremely challenging track to find a balance which will look after the tyres during a demanding race situation," Brawn further said. "Therefore all our work today focused on race preparation
and this confirmed how challenging the race will be. The critical element will be the longevity of the tyres and understanding how to work them to the maximum for as long as possible.”
The results that teams have gathered so far will help them improve on their pace and make the appropriate changes before Sunday’s race.
