Mercedes look forward to perform well in the 2013 Hungarian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Mercedes executive director, Toto Wolff has said that they are positively looking forward to perform well in the 2013 Hungarian Grand Prix despite being unable to test the new Pirelli tyres in the Young Driver Test held at the Silverstone circuit.
The Silver Arrows were not allowed to take part in the YDT because of their secret test with the Italian tyre company earlier. Resultantly, they couldn’t get the necessary understanding about the new tyres. Therefore, Wolff has insisted that they will have
to do some extra work during the Friday practice in order to create understanding about the new compound.
Besides, he stated that the circuit of the next race is very challenging, so they will require more grip on the soft and medium compound tyres so as to attain good results. In addition, he said that they may face problems due to high temperature at the Hungaroring
this weekend as they suffered with tyre degradation issue due to overheating in the preceding race.
“First, we will need to do extra homework on Friday to understand how the new tyres work with our car,” executive director Toto Wolff said. “Then we will have to get to grips with the high temperatures, a demanding circuit and the soft and medium compound
Pirelli tyres. During the race at the Nurburgring, we were overheating the tyres and we want to minimise the chance of suffering a repeat problem in Hungary, where the track temperatures will also be high.”
Nonetheless, he expressed that they have been working really hard to come up stronger in the approaching race and are aiming to score competitive points.
“The team has worked thoroughly since Germany to improve the situation and we will find out how the new tyres will affect that situation, too,” he added.
At present, the Brackley based squad are standing at second place in the constructors’ championship with 183 points. Furthermore, they are ahead of their major rival, Ferrari and behind the defending champions, Red Bull Racing.
It will be interesting to see whether they will be able to create the desired understanding about the new tyres ahead of the race day or not and how they perform in the season ahead.
