Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug praises Michael Schumacher – Formula 1 news
Mercedes Motorsport boss Norbert Haug has said that now that Mercedes is on track to set up a winning team it vindicates Michael Schumacher’s decision to return to the sport with Mercedes.
Haug believes that Schumacher will be a strong candidate for a win at Bahrain following an impressive show in China. Schumacher was placed second behind his teammate Nico Rosberg during the race and stopped for a pit stop. An error from the engineers’ team
caused Schumacher to retire the race after only 12 laps.
Haug said that it was unfortunate the way Schumacher retired. It could have been a one-two finish if he had not retired.
“It was a real shame for Michael - he had earned his place on the podium,” Haug said. “But it will come, and now everybody who at some point criticised the decision can see how important, and how right, it is to have Michael Schumacher in our team.”
“Michael has out-qualified Nico at two of three races this year, and Nico won yesterday. What's more, there's a nice trend to his grid positions so far in 2012: fourth in Australia, third in Malaysia, second in China,” he added.
Haug said that Mercedes is still a young team, and it has achieved success quicker than expected. The team has a modest budget and what it has achieved in the little time and budget available the team management has done a pretty good job.
He added that he wants to continue improving and the team is trying its level best to keep their feet grounded and avoid making any unnecessary waves in F1. The whole world joined in the celebrations of the teams win, the first since 1955.
Haug said that Daimler spends less than half the sum on Formula 1 than it did almost five years back but yet the team has managed to build a winning team and that is phenomenal. The win is now going to make the team push even harder for even better results
and wins.
