Mercedes performance in the current 2012 season so far – Formula 1
Mercedes have not been able to perform to their potential in the current season.
There were many speculations of different teams doing well in the season but most teams were adamant that Mercedes will be a team to watch out for in the 2012 season.
Adrian Newey technical director of Red Bull also said that Mercedes have something special in the season and they will be a strong unit to beat.
Sure enough, the team showed in the pre-season tests that they have a strong car with pace and reliability. The team just needed to mould the base according to the conditions and situations of the races in the season to compete at the highest level.
The season did not start as well as Mercedes would have like to but Nico Rosberg was able to win the Chinese Grand Prix which showed that the team was capable of winning.
While Nico Rosberg kept on giving some consistent performances after his win Michael Schumacher was not able to produce the results he would have liked to in the season.
The former world champion was facing difficulties with the tyres and some technical errors that caused him to underperform. The general consensus was that as soon as Mercedes stop making those errors Schumacher will be able to score some vital points for
the team.
Schumacher left the sport in 2006 arguably at the peak of his form. Although he left but his heart remained in the sport and 2012 was going to be the year he proves his comeback worthy enough.
Fans of the sport were excited to see one of the greats of the sport back and there were a lot of expectations from Schumacher especially when Brawn-GP had already won a championship the previous year Schumacher joined and the team changed to Mercedes.
Schumacher was not able to perform in the first season of his comeback and was gunning to do so in the current season, Schumacher was paired with a fellow countryman Nico Rosberg who comprehensively outplayed his veteran partner in 2011 season.
Schumacher though has been marred by team errors and bad luck during the current season to lose out on crucial points in the season. Still the German managed his first podium win since his comeback in the current season and is looking to improve on that
performance.
Mercedes left the summer break on a low point where Schumacher had to retire the race and the team knows that it lacks the pace to compete with the top teams of the current season. There is still a lot of work to be done for the team to remain and challenge
the top five teams.
It will be interesting to see how the team fares as the season moves into the second phase.
