Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn says new regulations increased unpredictability – Formula 1
Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn says that the stability in the rules and the regulation changes that the FIA has made for the 2012 season is the main reason behind the unpredictability of the races.
He said that more or less the competitive teams are racing with the same technologies and it has closed the gap between teams and raised the unpredictability of races.
So far in the season seven Grands Prix have been completed and already there have been seven different winners a world record in the sport.
The Championship standing shows a clear picture of just how competitive the season has been. The leading driver Lewis Hamilton is only two points ahead of Fernando Alonso at second who is only one point ahead of the third placed Sebastian Vettel.
Red Bull dominated the 2011 season with 12 wins but this season they have only been able to record two so far.
Brawn said the Hamilton finished the Canadian GP less than six seconds ahead of Romain Grosjean in the Lotus and Sergio Perez’s Sauber. He said that this situation is down to lack of new technologies to learn.
He mentioned the exhausts McLaren had the previous year and said that this year the teams have similar exhaust but they are not nearly as powerful. Last year was a steep learning curve with the exhaust systems influence over the aerodynamics. He did however
admit that the Pirelli tyres have their role to play in the results but it was still a result of the midfield teams performing well.
“I think inevitably with the rules staying the same the top teams start to flatten off a bit and the midfield teams catch them up, so I think that's one fact. I suspect the tyres are a contributory factor as well. There's so many nuances with the tyres that
understanding them and getting them to work well needs different strengths from the teams, and probably some of the teams like Williams and Sauber have done a good job in that respect,” he added.
It will be interesting to see how the teams progress in the season with such competitiveness.
