Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn thinks tyre management is crucial for victory – Formula 1 news
Mercedes team principal, Ross Brawn has said that tyre management is very important to claim victory in 2012 Formula 1 season.
The Brackley based team has the most successful pre-season testing programme this year and they have been considered as one of the most competitive contenders with their innovative DRS-activated F-duct design.
However, they have struggled in few races with the issue of tyre management. Nevertheless, Brawn has said that they are trying their best to improve their understanding regarding this year’s Pirelli tyres.
“I think the Pirelli tyres have been quite an enigma this year,” he said. “The understanding is definitely improving, but once you understand problem you need to find a solution and finding a solution is not always easy. It would appear that some cars are
able to attack the race without any consideration for the tyre because they don't use the tyres so severely, while other cars use the tyres very badly and suffer problems. You've even got cases with two drivers in the same car and one suffering and one not;
so it's very subtle, the boundaries.”
At present, Mercedes are standing at fifth place in the constructors’ championship with 69 points. Furthermore, they are 11 points ahead of Sauber-Ferrari and 28 points behind Scuderia-Ferrari.
Meanwhile, their driver, Nico Rosberg is presently at fifth place in the drivers’ rankings with 67 points. Additionally, he is ahead of Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus and behind Mark Webber of Red Bull Racing with 12 points.
Although, he could not be able to score even a single point in the first two races, nevertheless, he delivered a striking performance in the third race held at Shanghai International Circuit in China and took his maiden victory after claiming his first ever
pole position.
On the other hand, his teammate, Michael Schumacher has only been able to score 2 points in the season so far and has retired in five out of first seven races.
Even though, the seven-time world champion has delivered some inspiring performances in the qualifying of several grands prix, however, he could not be able to convert his competitive grid positions into a podium finish in any of the races.
Nonetheless, it will be important to mention that Brawn has recently said that they are making their best efforts to provide the record championship holder with a competitive car for the season ahead.
