Mercito Moya Gesta impresses in sparring session with Amir Khan – Boxing news
The Filipino professional boxer, Mercito Moya Gesta, who is currently the WBO NABO Youth Lightweight Champion, did an impressive sparring session with Light Welterweight British Prospect Amir Khan on Saturday at the Freddie Roach’s Wild Card gym.
The 23-year-old, Mercito Gesta is going to fight for the first time under the license of Top Rank promotional company on July 9, 2011.
The next possible opponent of the Mexican professional boxer, Gesta has not been decided yet however, it has been scheduled that the southpaw stance Gesta will be fighting under the Brandon Rios vs. Urbano Antillon fight card at the Home Depot Centre in
California, United States.
The co-manager and promoter of Gesta, Vince Parra said in a telephonic interview that in his four rounds sparring session with King Khan, Gesta looked very impressive and competitive. He said Gesta displayed extraordinary punching power and speed to convince
everyone watching him in the gym.
Parra said, “Gesta looked really good today. He got his respect. He came out and showed his speed and was very competitive, very high-paced. He is showing his ability. It was very fast and they were right there with each other, back and forth.”
Parra is looking very confident and satisfied with his fighter’s performance. While addressing the media in Los Angeles, Parra said, “Gesta will be ready for anybody. With that kind of sparring and preparation he feels
very confident.”
Parra commented that the reason why Gesta went against the WBA welterweight champion Khan in the session was that he could be more experienced and habitual of sparring to take positive steps in his growing career.
Last Wednesday when the two fighters came close in a two-round sparring session, Parra said, “They got their first week of sparring out of the way and next week it’s going to heat up even more.”
Gesta took an impressive start to his professional career by winning unanimous points decision over Edwin Picardal in their four rounds competitive bout on October 19, 2003 at the Joe Cantada Boxing Arena in Metro Manila Philippines.
Gesta is still undefeated and he is now coming to the ring after 12 consecutive victories. Hopefully, Gesta’s original fight results will be more pleasing for his promoter and manager then his sparring performances.
